WhistlePig Joins American Whiskey Association as CEO Alex Roberts takes board seat

WhistlePig has joined the American Whiskey Association (AWA), with the rye brand’s chief executive Alex Roberts appointed to the trade body’s board of directors. The Washington, D.C.-based association confirmed the move on 27 October 2026, strengthening its representation of established American whiskey producers.

“As America’s original whiskey, rye is an essential part of our nation’s whiskey story, and one that deserves to be shared with consumers around the world,” said Roberts.

“WhistlePig was built to push American rye forward. We’re pleased to join the American Whiskey Association and work with its members to make American whiskey the world’s whiskey.”

The American Whiskey Association was founded to protect, promote and lead the American whiskey industry worldwide, with a mission to make American whiskey the world’s whiskey by expanding market access and advocating for fair trade. The Vermont rye specialist becomes the latest producer to align with the AWA as it pursues international growth.

Michael Bilello, president and CEO of the American Whiskey Association, welcomed the brand’s arrival.

“WhistlePig brings a distinctive perspective and a strong commitment to American whiskey,” said Bilello. “Alex understands the opportunity to grow this category at home and abroad. His leadership will strengthen our work to open markets and help American whiskey compete around the world.”

As an AWA member, WhistlePig will join producers and industry partners working to advance American whiskey through coordinated advocacy, market access efforts and industry engagement.

The association’s priorities include expanding fair opportunities for American whiskey in international markets, supporting the industry’s agricultural and manufacturing supply chain, and promoting the category’s contributions to jobs and local economies.

“American whiskey is made in communities across the country and has a growing following around the world,” Bilello added. “Bringing more producers together strengthens our ability to represent the industry and pursue shared goals. We have global growth aspirations.”

Founded in 2025, the AWA counts major producers among its ranks. Its founding members include Brown-Forman, Diageo, Pernod Ricard, Suntory Global Spirits, Sazerac and Campari Group.

WhistlePig itself dates to 2007. The brand was established when entrepreneur Raj Bhakta purchased land for the WhistlePig distillery, with the whiskey brand launched in 2010 and its 10-year rye released in 2015.

The appointment follows the AWA’s recent recruitment of Brother’s Bond Bourbon, the brand co-founded by actors Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley, as a Global Growth Craft Member.
